International Conference: What can we learn about education from Finland?

“What can we learn about education from Finland?” was the title of the international conference organized at ZSEM on September 28, 2016, by the Zagreb School of Economics and Management, the agency IMC and Styria, with the support of partners from the Embassy of Finland and the Rotary Club of Zagreb Agram. Dean Duro Njavro, PhD, opened the conference while Timo Rajakangas, the Ambassador of Finland to Croatia, together with experts from Finland – Dr. Marjaana Manninen and Lasse Laponiemija, the leader of curriculum reform in Finland, and experts from Croatia’s educational system, entrepreneurs and the media took part in the dialogue.

The key to the success of the Finnish educational system, according to experts from Finland, is the participation of all stakeholders, a high level of educated lecturers and a quality curriculum. “The only way we can improve the quality of life and the wealth of the country was through education,” says Lasse Laponiemi. Marjaana Manninen added that “Croatia is on the right track when it comes to education, because it started with thematizing stories about education.” It has points in common with the Finnish educational system, however, there is still much that we can learn from the Finns.
